Retreats

Hero Haven provides intensive 4-day training retreats for first responders where you can work with licensed mental health professionals to heal through your own trauma, and develop skills that enable you to help your brothers and sisters dealing with PTSD. After completing the training, a newly trained Haven Coach can attend regular monthly meetings where you help fellow first responders receive mental and emotional healing tools, support, and resources to encourage healing, all at no cost to the first responder.

“I have been in the fire service for over 30 years, and I am tired. I am tired of knowing every year on my birthday, I am going see the face of that poor baby that we couldn't save on that date almost 20 years ago. I am tired of knowing that every Christmas Eve I am going to see the face of those young kids who thought they heard Santa and came running down the stairs only to see us trying to breathe the life back into their father. I am tired of almost every time I drive by a certain intersection, I see the elderly woman we pulled out of a car wreck with double amputations. I am tired of the smell of decaying flesh that never truly leaves your senses no matter how many times you shower. I am tired of the other dozens of bad calls that pop up randomly in my brain. I am tired of being the tough guy who doesn't cry, I am tired of stuffing my feelings deep inside because that is what a man does.

In 2019 we lost almost 3 times as many first responders to suicide then we did in line of duty deaths. I am lucky I got help. This last weekend, I joined Hero Haven of Clinton County. I attended a retreat with 7 of my brothers in the fire service, and 4 amazing counselors. I learned that I am not alone, it is OK to talk about what I am feeling, I learned that I could trust my brothers to keep my secrets. I am on a path to healing. If you are a first responder or love a first responder and they need a safe place to talk, please reach out to me and I will help. Don't let it get this bad.”
